Commercial coffee installation: tank or mains?
Start a site survey with the water arrangement on the exact quotation. A tank machine needs a practical refill and waste-handling routine; a plumbed machine needs the applicable inlet, drainage and treatment plan. Neither arrangement removes the need to verify electrical supply, access and operator cleaning.
For multi-site or industrial coffee installations, keep a configuration and commissioning record per location. Industrial is a search description, not a shared electrical rating or permission to install machinery. The manufacturer drawing and the qualified site survey set the requirements.
| Quoted arrangement | Buyer checks before ordering | Record in the buying brief |
|---|---|---|
| Tank / reservoir | Refill access, full-tank handling, grounds and drip-tray removal | Who refills; expected interruptions; water treatment |
| Mains water | Exact inlet kit, water results, accessible isolation and waste route | Installer scope; drawing revision; unresolved connections |
| Machine plus cooler / grinder | Combined footprint, door swing and separate electrical loads | Every accessory model, supply requirement and service access |
Freeze the configuration before requesting drawings
A model name alone is not an installation specification. Identify market, electrical version, water arrangement, cooler, hopper, payment components and under-counter accessories in one list. Request the applicable installation drawing, connection schedule and manual; record their revision and scope rather than substituting a similar model.
Franke Planner Data is a route to machine and accessory documents. The La Marzocco USA Linea Mini guide is an example of product/market-specific documentation, not a source of universal electrical or clearance requirements.
Measure the operating envelope, not just the cabinet
Survey delivery routes, doors, lifts, corners and the handling position, then verify counter support conditions. Draw every unit and separately mark room for opening doors, removing grounds, filling beans or water and servicing. A machine that physically fits may still be impractical to maintain during trading.
Mock up the footprint with card or tape and ask actual operators to rehearse. Check overhead cupboards, cooler-door swing and full drip-tray removal. Have the installer confirm any cut-outs against the drawing; do not cut from photographs or alter an unverified load-bearing structure.
Have qualified personnel verify power and shared loads
Match the applicable nameplate or document to site voltage, frequency, phases and connection requirements. Include grinder, cooler and nearby appliances in the supply review; matching the main machine wattage alone does not establish socket suitability. This guide does not provide wiring, protective-device selection or live-work instructions.
Name the parties responsible for survey, confirmation, connection provision and pre-energisation checks. A specification for one market does not prove that a same-named version from another market is suitable. If the quotation says standard installation, obtain a defined scope and a process for resolving an unsuitable site.
Request a water parameter panel, not one reading
Obtain the requirements for the selected machine, market and applicable warranty conditions before sampling. Record sampling point, date, raw versus treated water and units. Total dissolved solids, hardness, alkalinity and chloride are different measures; one handheld reading cannot replace the required panel.
La Marzocco’s water specification illustrates multiple parameters, not limits to assign to every machine. Ask why the proposed treatment fits the results and arrange relevant checks after installation. Drinking-water suitability, acceptable taste and meeting equipment inlet requirements are separate confirmations.
Plan inlet, waste and filter replacement together
Confirm whether the machine uses a reservoir, mains or an optional connection kit. Have the installer verify pressure, flow, connection form and accessible isolation according to the manual. Draw a separate waste route covering normal operation and cleaning; an inlet point alone does not make the site ready.
Allow physical access to replace a cartridge and record readings. BRITA PURITY C Quell ST publishes capacity with carbonate-hardness and bypass conditions. Establish replacement from the chosen cartridge instructions, measured use and site water, rather than applying a universal six-month rule.
Worked example: spare width does not prove readiness
This is an invented layout exercise, not a manufacturer clearance rule. A 1,200 mm counter holds assumed widths of 450 mm for the machine, 300 mm for a cooler and 200 mm for a grinder, leaving 250 mm. That remainder does not establish ventilation or service clearance; only the applicable documents can do so.
An overhead cupboard may block beans, a cooler door may obstruct passage, or a filter may be impossible to remove. Keep each as an unresolved condition with an owner and revised drawing before ordering. “We will solve it on delivery” is not an installation plan.
| Assumed planning item | Finding | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Static width | 1200 − 450 − 300 − 200 = 250 mm | Check actual required clearances |
| Bean-filling access | Not measured | Test real lid movement or drawing |
| Filter and waste | Cabinet exists; routes unconfirmed | Verify replacement and drainage paths |
| Power | Only a socket photograph | Qualified on-site verification |
Keep a traceable commissioning record
Check configuration, serial number, drawing revision, site water results and accessories at handover. Have the installer complete applicable running and connection checks, and operators practise replenishment, cleaning and normal shutdown. Record defects and closure dates; a few successful drinks do not prove complete site acceptance.
Hand over cartridge model, installation date, initial water-use reading, next inspection conditions and service contacts. Common failures include omitted cooler loads, cabinet-only dimensions, mixed-market manuals and a single water reading. The buyer coordinates evidence and responsibility rather than wiring or opening the machine.
Coffee installations: what belongs in the handover checklist?
For one or several coffee installations, keep a separate site record for each purchased configuration. CoffeeFrame’s suggested handover pack includes the approved drawing revision, utility confirmations, water results, accessories, commissioning record, operator cleaning demonstration and local service contact. The checklist organises procurement; it does not replace the applicable manufacturer instructions.
Who provides the socket, inlet, waste connection, filtration and counter openings? Ask the supplier to name an owner for each item in the quotation. Before accepting delivery, resolve any mismatch between the survey and the ordered electrical or water version. Then retain the exact configuration in the comparison and procurement brief.
Take these questions to a supplier
- Which model, market, electrical version and accessories does this drawing cover?
- Have filling, grounds removal, cooler access and servicing been rehearsed?
- Who verifies power, water and waste, and what work is excluded from standard installation?
- Do site tests cover each applicable water requirement, and who retests treated water?
- How are filters recorded, replaced and purchased, and who retains commissioning records?
