Choose the workflow first
Bambino and Bambino Plus separate brewing from grinding. This makes sense if you already own an espresso grinder, want to change grinders independently, or prefer to spread the equipment across the counter. Include both appliances when measuring space and setting a budget.
Barista Express Impress combines grinding, dosing assistance and tamping assistance. It suits a household that wants help preparing a repeatable puck while retaining manual extraction and milk preparation. It still needs a user to move the portafilter and clean the machine.
What changes between the three machines
Breville lists ThermoJet heating for Bambino and Bambino Plus. The standard Bambino uses manual steaming; Plus adds automatic milk texturing. The advertised three-second heating readiness is not a timed result for a complete drink or for a warmed cup.
The US BES876 Impress page lists 25 grind settings, assisted tamping and Thermocoil heating with PID control. Its 54 mm portafilter is shared in size with the Bambino family, but compatible accessories still need checking by model.
| Decision | Bambino | Bambino Plus | Express Impress |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grinder | Separate | Separate | Built in |
| Milk preparation | Manual | Automatic texture option | Manual |
| Puck preparation | User doses and tamps | User doses and tamps | Assisted dosing and tamping |
| Choose when | You want a compact brewing station | Milk assistance matters | Grinding and tamping are the bottleneck |
Measure the complete station
Allow room for a grinder, scale, knock box and pitcher, along with access to the tank and drip tray. Check the current dimensional drawing rather than relying on a product photograph. Breville’s US listing supplies dimensions, but confirm the front-to-back orientation with the seller if the counter is tight.
Compare Bambino BES450, Bambino Plus and Barista Express Impress with the exact configuration selected. Record electrical supply and accessory requirements in your buying brief.
Test a normal morning
Prepare the drinks you actually serve, including grinding, tamping, steaming and cleaning. For several household users, repeat the test with different users and record how often they need to correct a dose or milk texture. This is more useful than comparing pump pressure alone.
Choose a separate-grinder setup if independent upgrades and grind flexibility matter most. Choose Impress if assistance with preparation saves effort in your daily routine. Include grinder cleaning, filters and descaling in the ongoing cost estimate.
Check the model and market
This comparison concerns Barista Express Impress BES876. The classic Barista Express BES870 is a different model and its settings should not be substituted. Sage branding in the UK also requires checking the local model code, power supply and warranty territory. US specifications do not establish UK compatibility.
Take these questions to a supplier
- Do I want a separate grinder or integrated grinding?
- Is automatic milk texturing a daily requirement?
- Does the complete station fit, with tank and tray access?
- Which electrical version and warranty territory will I receive?
- Can every household user complete the normal drink routine?
